In the Sackwald near Winzenburg, the castle remains of Hohe Schanze represent an early medieval complex on a 326-meter-high mountain. The site is notable for its historical finds dating back to the Stone Age.

History+

The history of Hohe Schanze extends far back, with evidence of human settlement already in the Stone and Iron Ages. The castle complex itself was likely fortified with earthworks and palisades. Today, the foundations of several structures are still visible, including what is presumed to be a Carolingian church and defensive towers.
