Hohe Schanze Castle
The Hohe Schanze is a 326 m high mountain with an early medieval castle on the Rennstieg (Sackwald) near Winzenburg in the southern Sackwald in the district of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony.
At the castle site, artifacts from the Stone Age and Iron Age were found. The castle complex was probably fortified by earthworks with palisades. Today, the former complex has been reclaimed by nature. The foundations of several buildings are still present, including presumably a Carolingian church and defensive towers. Remnants of the ramparts are still present and clearly visible, but in places they are covered by bushes and shrubs. A historical educational trail explains the finds with panels and diagrams.
Name+
The current name of the castle is derived from the mountain "Hohe Schanze" on which it stands. However, the name could also refer to the fortification of the castle as a "Schanze" (redoubt/entrenchment). Different sources also mention the names Oldenburg, Ohlenburg, or Olenborg.
