Hüneberg Castle

The Hüneberg castle ruins, also known as Burghalde, are the ruins of a hilltop castle on a 528.3 m above sea level sandstone ridge of the Hüneberg above the municipality of Sipplingen in the Bodenseekreis in Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of Hüneberg; on March 15, 1171, Gerungus de Huneberc was the first nobleman of this family to be mentioned. The Lords of Hüneberg were ministeriales of Reichenau Abbey; from the 13th century, they served the Counts of Heiligenberg, in whose documents they appear several times. The noble family probably died out during the 14th century, and with their extinction, their castle also fell into disrepair. In 1494, a part of the "burgstal uff dem Hünenberg" was sold by a citizen of Constance.

Of the former castle complex on an oval castle area of approximately 130 by 17 meters, there was a core castle of approximately 17 by 70 meters. Today, 6-meter-high wall remains of the residential tower are preserved, as well as remains of a section ditch.
