Hünenburg Castle

Around the year 1170, Count Konrad I of Roden had Hünenburg Castle built. This occurred at a time when the Counts of Roden already possessed an important stronghold with Roden Castle near Hessisch Oldendorf. However, the existence of Hünenburg was short-lived, as it was destroyed only about ten years after its construction, around 1180 or 1181, by troops under Count Adolf III of Schaumburg. The reason for this destruction was Konrad I's allegiance to Duke Henry the Lion. Archaeological finds, including 12th-century pottery, confirm that the castle continued to be used after its destruction until the 14th century, before stone quarrying removed most of the above-ground structures.
