Kastelberg Castle

The hilltop castle was built in the 12th century. It is presumed that the Lords of Üsenberg were the builders, although no direct evidence exists for this. A documentary mention of a “Rudofus de Castilhovin” in 1203 indicates the presence of a castle on the Castellberg. In 1342, the complex was already referred to as a 'Burgstall' (castle site) in the Tennenbach property register. Archaeological finds confirm that the mountain was already settled in the Bronze Age, Urnfield culture, and Hallstatt period, and was fortified with a rampart in prehistoric times. Roman settlement, however, could not be confirmed.
