Kogl Castle

The origins of settlement date back to the 8th century, when the “Atarhoven” palatinate in the Attergau was mentioned as an Agilolfingian and later Frankish royal possession. In 1007, it came into the possession of the Diocese of Bamberg through a donation from Emperor Heinrich II to support the construction of Bamberg Cathedral. Kogl Castle itself was built in 1264 under Bishop Berthold of Bamberg, replacing the older Attersee Castle. Initially known as Neuattersee, the name Kogl soon became established. The castle experienced frequent changes of ownership and was often pledged, including to the Schaunbergers and later to Duke Albrecht III of Austria as a Bamberg fief. The Habsburgs, in turn, granted Kogl as a princely fief or pledged it.
