Lichtenstein Castle

The first documented mention of Lichtenstein Castle dates back to 1404, when it was recorded as property of the Dukes of Grubenhagen. In the following years, around 1406, documents also confirmed Duke Erich I of Grubenhagen as its owner. In the 15th century, the castle was pledged several times, including to the robber knight Herwig von Utze. After an attack on Goslar in 1438, this led to a military campaign in which the castle was conquered, burned down, and subsequently rebuilt in 1439. Disputes over ownership, which existed between the Dukes of Grubenhagen and the city of Goslar, were settled in 1442 by arbitration. Further pledges are known from 1481 and 1507. A final mention of the castle occurred in 1567, with the wording suggesting that at this time only the forest area, but not the castle itself, still existed. After the Thirty Years' War, the ruin served as a hideout for the robber Hans Warnecke.
