Near Weilheim an der Teck, the Limburg castle remains stand on a conical mountain of volcanic origin. This hilltop castle, once the ancestral seat of the Zähringer dynasty, is now a freely accessible relic.

History+

Around the year 1060, Count Berthold I of Zähringen had the Limburg built, which was first documented in 1077. It served as the original ancestral seat of the Zähringer before they moved their main residence to Zähringen Castle around 1100 and changed their name. The castle was probably destroyed during the Investiture Controversy, but rebuilt and subsequently inhabited by Zähringer vassals.
