The remains of the Castle can be visited

On the Neuenahrer Berg in the lower Ahr Valley are the ruins of Neuenahr Castle, a former hilltop castle. This ruin in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Pfalz, today gives a glimpse into the medieval history of the region.

History+

Neuenahr Castle was built around 1225 by Count Otto von Neuenare. He was the first to name himself after the newly constructed castle, having previously been known as Otto von Landahr. After Otto's death in 1276, his widow Hedwig and their children pledged the county, with the exception of the castle and some lands, to Archbishop Siegfried of Cologne. Wilhelm I, unable to redeem the county, transferred it to the Archbishop as a fief.
