The Oeding Castle remains, once a moated castle, are located in Südlohn-Oeding in the Borken district, North Rhine-Westphalia. Today, only a tower of the original complex remains, integrated into a modern hotel.

History+

Oeding Castle was first documented in 1353 when the knight Johann von Bermentvelde sold his main estate, including the castle, to Bishop Ludwig II of Münster. However, Johann von Bermentvelde was immediately enfeoffed with the property again and fully regained it in 1365. After Bishop Florenz of Münster had the castle destroyed around 1372, it was rebuilt shortly thereafter by Johann von Gemen as a rectangular curtain-wall castle of the castellum type. He established a main and outer bailey and promoted settlement of the castle's liberties, which shaped the development of the town of Oeding.
