Ringethal Castle

The moated castle Ringethal (also known as Inselteich, Schneckenteich) is a vanished moated castle in the west of Ringethal in Saxony. It was probably built in the 13th or 14th century.

The fortification had a rounded-rectangular core work of about 15 by 20 meters. This was located on an island in the pond, which most likely coined the name Inselteich (Island Pond) for the complex. The distance between the banks of the pond and the island is about 10 meters in the north, and significantly larger on the other sides. Stone masonry is visible at the northeast corner of the core work. The core work plateau is about 2 meters above the water surface.

The Lordship of Ringethal consisted of the knight's seat Ringethal and the farming villages of Falkenhain, Hermsdorf, and Erlebach. Initially established on the Arnsberg (hermitage) in a Zschopau loop on a rocky spur, the seat of the lordship was moved to Lewenhain Castle on the steep bank of the Zschopau in 1315.
