Sand Castle

Burg Sand is likely the predecessor of Burg Raabs. The site was previously unknown and was only discovered in 1992 during site surveys. It was built from wood, earth, and stones and was designed for a larger community. Dendrochronology precisely dates its construction to the years 926 to no later than 930. The castle complex was destroyed again as early as the 10th century.

In the northwestern Waldviertel, based on existing written sources, the earliest medieval settlement penetration was assumed to have occurred only with the establishment of the lordships of Poigen-Rebgau, Pernegg-Drosendorf, and Raabs during the 11th century. Against the backdrop of the extremely sparse written sources for the 10th century, it was all the more gratifying that an "archaeological deed" could now be brought to light, indicating that a not insignificant settlement record already exists from the 10th century in the area of the later Raabs lordship.
