Winzberg Castle
The Winzberg castle site is a vanished hilltop castle in the eponymous district of Winzberg in the municipality of Kirchberg ob der Donau in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria.
The first known person was Wernherr von Winzberg (* around 1190, † 1227); he was married to Helene, daughter of Ulrich von Tannberg. In 1260, Wernher de Winzberch appears in a document. In 1309, Wilhalm de Winsperger is mentioned, and in 1329, the fortress Winsperg and what belongs to it. The Winzbergers were vassals of the Tannbergers. From 1397 onwards, they are considered extinct or migrated.
Winzberg Castle Site Today+
On a spur of the Öxlau leading to the Danube and within sight of Neuhaus Castle lie the remains of Winsberg Castle. The castle site is only accessible to experienced climbers.
The moat is drawn in a semicircle from slope to slope. The slope towards the Danube is strewn with the ruins of the castle (hewn ashlar blocks). The cause of the decay is not known. Ceramic finds have been made and the site is a protected monument.
