The Winzberg Castle remains, a former hilltop castle, are located in Kirchberg ob der Donau-Winzberg in Upper Austria. Only a castle site remains today.

History+

The history of Winzberg Castle begins with Wernherr von Winzberg, who was born around 1190 and died in 1227. He was married to Helene, the daughter of Ulrich von Tannberg. In 1260, a Wernher de Winzberch is mentioned in a document. Later, in 1309, Wilhalm de Winsperger appears in records, followed by the mention of the “Veste Winsperg” and its possessions in 1329. The Winzberg family served as vassals to the Lords of Tannberg. From 1397 onwards, their traces disappear; the family is considered either extinct or to have migrated.
