The remains of Wolfsberg Castle, a historic fortification, are located on a hill near Sangerhausen in Saxony-Anhalt. Of the once extensive medieval complex, only a few foundation remnants survive today.

History+

Wolfsberg Castle was built around 1300 by the Counts of Beichlingen-Rothenburg, similar to the neighboring Questenberg Castle. Around 1309, it came into the possession of the Counts of Anhalt-Bernburg, who later pledged it. The new lords of the castle came into conflict with the Counts of Stolberg, whose property they damaged. Count Heinrich zu Stolberg took Wolfsberg Castle into his own hands around 1320 after a legal dispute. To secure the conquered property, he enfeoffed it to Bishop Albrecht of Halberstadt and was officially invested with it on December 18, 1325. At the end of 1326, the castle served as an object of atonement in disputes over other castles.
