Aichelberg Castle

The origins of the complex trace back to a late Romanesque fortification. The Eychelburg family is documented as early as 1224 and were the original owners. In 1431, the castle passed into the possession of the Khevenhüller, who contributed to its expansion and later reconstruction. During the conflict between Emperor Frederick III and the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, the castle was destroyed in 1484. Its reconstruction, which gave it its current form, took place at the end of the 15th century. In 1629, the Protestant Khevenhüller, who emigrated, sold the castle to Hans Siegmund Graf von Wagensberg. Ownership later passed to the Orsini-Rosenberg family. A depiction by Valvasor from 1688 shows that the castle was already in decay at that time.
