The Aichelburg castle ruin is a hilltop castle in the Gailtal valley, whose origins date back to the 13th or 14th century.

History+

A tower at this location was first documented in 1307 during a division of properties among the Counts of Görz. The name “Aichelburg” first appeared in 1432. The castle suffered damage around 1460 by the troops of Emperor Frederick III. After his father's death, Maximilian I permitted Leonhart Platzer to rebuild the castle in 1494. In 1500, Maximilian I enfeoffed Christoph Viertaler with the estate; Viertaler was ennobled in 1507 and subsequently allowed to call himself “von Aichelburg”. After a fire in 1516, the castle was rebuilt, with the new structure likely resembling the depiction by Valvasor in 1688.
