Old-Aspermont Castle

Alt-Aspermont was presumably founded by the Lords of Aspermont, first documented in 1170, who later served as ministerials of the Bishop of Chur. Bishop Heinrich von Montfort acquired the castle between 1251 and 1272. In 1275, it passed to the Barons of Vaz as a life tenancy, remaining in their possession until 1284. Following an arbitration ruling in 1299, Johann von Vaz renounced his claims. The bishop mortgaged the castle to Ulrich von Aspermont in 1328, and after his death in 1338, to the brothers Ludwig and Walter von Stadion. In 1354, it was further mortgaged by the bishop to Heinrich and Martin Buwix. In 1452, Alt-Aspermont was besieged by the Gotteshausleute during the Schams Feud, with the episcopal garrison being granted free withdrawal. In 1496, the bishop sold the castle to Knight Hartmann Rordorff in Zurich.
