Alt-Leonroth Castle
The castle ruin Alt-Leonroth (also called Leonrod, Leonrode, Leonroth) is located in the Teigitsch Valley in the municipality of St. Martin am Wöllmißberg in the district of Voitsberg in Styria.
The castle secured the road from the Kainach Valley to Pack and thus one of the routes over the Koralpe.
The remains of the castle are located in the Teigitsch Valley in the village of Großwöllmiß on a promontory facing southeast above an old path to the Packsattel between the Kainach and Mur valleys.
The complex was probably built at the end of the 12th century by the Kremser family, who also called themselves Krems-Leonrode in connection with the castle. They were a ministerial family of the Styrian landlords. It is presumed that Otto von Krems, who is noted with this name in 1196, was the builder of the complex. When the castle was abandoned is unknown. Archaeological investigations have so far only taken place in the form of surveys, during which vessel ceramics from the second half of the 13th century to the 16th century, as well as some projectile points, were found.
The name of the castle refers to a cleared area on a hill: Lewenrode, (not lion, Lat. leo, older word: Leu).
Complex+
The castle had an extent of approximately 100 by 30 meters. Only a few remains are preserved. The course of the walls can only be traced in the foundations. In the northwest, wall sections over two meters high with loopholes for crossbows are still standing. To the west, the castle was secured by a ditch; to the north, south, and east, the terrain slopes steeply into the Teigitsch Valley and required no additional security. In the southeast, there are remains of rooms behind meter-thick wall foundations.
Older literature states a rock outcrop west of Neu-Leonroth Castle as the location of the castle. This is not correct; this other castle is located over 2.6 km north-northeast of Alt-Leonroth.
