Alt-Montfort Castle
Alt-Montfort Castle was located between Weiler and Fraxern in the Rhine Valley of Vorarlberg. Hugo III von Tübingen, who later called himself Hugo I von Montfort, had it built at the end of the 12th century; the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1206 or 1208.
"Montfort" is the French term for "strong castle". The "Counts of Montfort" named themselves after this residence.
In 1375, Duke Leopold III of Austria took over the castle. During the Appenzell War in 1405, the castle complex was completely destroyed. In 1417, the castle came into the possession of the Toggenburg family, and in 1436, into the possession of Duke Frederick IV of Austria. From 1679, the Clary family owned the castle. In 1837, Michael Fink became the owner. Today, only a few remnants of walls remain and are recognizable.
