The castle ruin Alt-Montfort, once a defensive structure, is above the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley. Its remains are linked to the noble family of Montfort.

History+

At the end of the 12th century, Alt-Montfort Castle was built by Hugo III of Tübingen, later known as Hugo I of Montfort. Its first documented mention occurred around 1206 or 1208. The name "Montfort" derives from the French term for "strong castle" and became the namesake of the Counts of Montfort. In 1375, the castle passed into the possession of Duke Leopold III of Austria. During the Appenzell War in 1405, the complex suffered complete destruction.
