History+
The construction of Alt-Scharfeneck Castle is dated to around 1100 to 1130, presumably during the era of the Salian emperors. This is evidenced by excavations from the 1950s and 1970s, which uncovered small-square masonry and clay-mortared stone, both typical of the Salian period. These findings contradict earlier assumptions that the castle was built on behalf of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to protect the Trifels. In 1219, Henry I of Scharfeneck owned the castle, after which he named himself. His sons Henry the Elder and Henry the Younger followed him as owners in 1232.
