The castle ruin of Alt-Schielleiten, a former fortress of the Stubenberg family, is strategically located on a valley flank in Styria, Austria. Its history is marked by the defense against eastern enemies and a change of Protestant and Catholic owners, before it was abandoned in the 18th century and now stands as an accessible ruin.

History+

The construction of Alt-Schielleiten Castle took place in the late 13th century by the Stubenberg family. Its main task was to repel attackers from the east before they could reach the nearby Stubenberg Castle. The Lords of Schielleiten, first mentioned in 1328, served the Stubenbergs as feudal vassals. After the death of the last family member, Wulfing von Schielleiten, before 1400, the Rindschad family took over the castle, also in the service of the Stubenbergs.
