The castle ruin of Alt-Starkenberg was the ancestral seat of the Starkenberger family. Its origins date back to the second half of the 12th century.

History+

It was first documented in 1217 in connection with Georg von Starkenberg, its first known owner. Throughout the 13th century, the castle served several times as a place for the notarization of important documents, for example in 1284 and 1290. A record from 1328 reports that Georg von Starkenberg took over guardianship for his nephews and received sole control over the castle for a decade. In 1341, an indulgence letter was issued for the castle chapel, which was dedicated to Saints George and Leonard. The castle's fate took a turn in 1422 when it was conquered and completely destroyed by Duke Frederick IV during the Starkenberger Feud.
