Alteburg Castle
In Essen-Heidhausen, the Alteburg castle ruin is a Carolingian ring fort on the left bank of the Ruhr. It is now a protected monument.
History+
The Alteburg was constructed during the Carolingian era and served as a ring fort. In its vicinity, just a few hundred meters to the north on the Pastoratsberg, a similar complex known as Herrenburg existed between the 9th and 11th centuries.

The Alteburg castle ruin is situated in Essen-Heidhausen, a district of Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 152 meters above sea level.
