The Althaus castle ruin, a historic fortress in Carinthia, Austria, is on a rocky hill.

History+

The first documented mention of Althaus Castle, then referred to as a fortified residence, dates back to 1247. Given the early mining in the surrounding area, an even older defensive structure at this location cannot be ruled out. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the surrounding area was owned by the Archdiocese of Salzburg, which entrusted its administration to various feudal lords. After the lineage of Wulfingus de Huse died out in 1279, Ortlof von Saurau was appointed administrator.
