Altmannsberg Castle

Traces indicate that various fortifications existed here long before the turn of the millennium. Today, two of them remain. It was a twin complex, of which Mannsberg Castle is still preserved. When Altmannsberg was left to decay is not known.

Between 1065 and 1075, the Tyrolean nobleman Adalbero gifted his castle Magnesperc to Bishop Altwin of Brixen. In 1163, Hermann von Mannsberg is mentioned as a feudal tenant. From 1190 to 1340, the Lords of Schrankbaum were owners of the castle. From 1340 to 1362, Hans Graf von Pfannberg was the castle owner. When he died as the last of his family, Altmannsberg reverted to the sovereign as an escheated fief. Hugo Graf von Montfort-Bregenz emerged victorious from the subsequent inheritance dispute. He was enfeoffed with the lordship.

In 1551, the ruin was sold to Bartholomäus Khevenhüller von Aichelberg. As a Protestant, Sigmund von Khevenhüller had to leave the country in 1629. Before that, he had sold Altmannsberg to the Cathedral Chapter of Gurk. In 1874, the Viennese lawyer Dr. Alois Spitzer acquired the already heavily dilapidated ruin. Altmannsberg subsequently changed owners several times but remains in private ownership.
