Altmannstein Castle

The origins of the site date back to the Lords of Stein, first documented around 1120. After the extinction of this family in 1232, the area passed to Altmann II von Abensberg, a relative of the Lords of Stein, who had the castle built. In 1291, the complex went to Duke Ludwig the Strict of Bavaria before being sold to Konrad and Heinrich von Hautzendorf in 1340. The Counts of Abensberg acquired the pledge right in 1374, thus regaining possession of the castle. In 1446, the fortress was captured by Nuremberg troops because the lord of the castle, Johann von Abensberg, maintained connections with robber knights. The end of the Babonen line in Altmannstein was marked in 1485 by Duke Christoph's attack on Niklas von Abensberg and Altmannstein, during which he was killed.
