Altroßwag Castle

The castle ruin Altroßwag is the remnant of a former hill castle at 250 m above sea level on the Enz loop near Roßwag in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was probably built in the 11th or 12th century, but is only first mentioned in a document in 1301. It was the ancestral castle of the Lords of Roßwag, who are traceable from the 12th to the 14th century. At the beginning of the 14th century, the noble family was divided into an Altroßwag line and a Neuroßwag line. After the family died out in the male line, the castle came into the possession of the Lords of Stein, who sold the castle to Maulbronn Monastery in 1394. Due to lack of use, the castle began to decay into a ruin.
Description+
Altroßwag is located on the northeastern Enz loop between Mühlhausen and Roßwag on the left bank of the river. The ruin is located in the Roßwag district near the border to the Enz district.
Only wall and excavation remains of the castle are preserved, which are not publicly accessible due to the steep slope.
Neuroßwag+
In 14th-century documents, records of another castle in Roßwag are found, which is called Neuroßwag and is said to have been located on the right side of the Enz. It became Maulbronn property via the Counts of Württemberg in 1394 and was subsequently demolished.
Nothing remains of Neuroßwag Castle today and its exact location is not known. It was probably located south of Roßwag, although the existence of Neuroßwag is occasionally questioned entirely.
