Altsachsenheim Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

Altsachsenheim is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Sachsenheim in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg. The ruin of the castle complex is located above the Enz valley at 230 m above sea level near the village of Untermberg. Its location above the Enz valley allowed its owners to collect tolls from rafters and carters.

Untermberg belonged to the city of Großsachsenheim until 1953, but was then incorporated into the municipality of Bissingen an der Enz and, as part of the municipal reform in 1975, became part of the present-day city of Bietigheim-Bissingen. The castle ruin of Altsachsenheim was thus separated from Untermberg, remaining with the city of Großsachsenheim, from which the present-day city of Sachsenheim emerged as part of the municipal reform.

Immediately adjacent to the ruin is the hamlet of Egartenhof, which also belongs to Sachsenheim. The castle was built in the 13th century as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Sachsenheim. Around 1430, it came into the possession of the Lords of Nippenburg.

Inside the ruin, the corbels show that the building originally consisted of three floors. In a map from 1685, the castle is already noted as a ruin and bears the name "Eyßenburg". The name "Eyßenburg" indicates "outer castle", in contrast to the "inner castle", the moated castle of Großsachsenheim. Approximately 1 km to the west, the former observation post "Türmle" is still visible.
