Altweilnau Castle

Around 1200, Altweilnau Castle was built by the Counts of Diez and was first documented in 1208 under the name Wilnawe. Dendrochronological examinations within the keep confirm the castle's existence at this early date. In 1336, Altweilnau briefly received town rights, leading to the construction of walls and a gate tower. A chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine was mentioned in 1352, and a new castle chapel was built in 1486. The castle remained inhabited until 1563 but was abandoned from 1608 onwards and fell into disrepair during the Thirty Years' War. Later, stones from the complex were used to construct houses in Altweilnau.
