The castle ruin Altwied, the ancestral seat of the Counts of Wied, is situated on a rock ridge in the lower Wied Valley, encircled by the river Wied. This hilltop castle is located in today's Neuwied district of Altwied.

History+

The origins of Altwied Castle date back to before 1129, when Metfried, Count in Engersgau, had the residential tower in the eastern part of the later main castle built as the center of his manorial estate. In 1129, he was first mentioned as “Meffridus de Widhe”. Under his grandson Count Theoderich, the first construction phase was completed in 1179. The castle chapel, dedicated to Saint George, was first documented in 1259, and in 1275, the associated castle village of Altwied was mentioned. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the entire castle village was surrounded by a fortified wall and several towers.
