The Anhalt Castle Ruin, a former medieval fortress, is in the Harz mountains near Harzgerode-Meisdorf. It gave its name to the state of Anhalt.

History+

Around the year 1123, Anhalt Castle was built by Otto the Rich from Ballenstedt. As early as 1140, the initial structure was destroyed during a conflict between the Archbishop of Magdeburg and Margrave Konrad of Meissen. After 1147, Albrecht the Bear, an Ascania, initiated the reconstruction of the castle. The newly erected fortress was among the most powerful in the Harz region and remained inhabited until approximately 1300. Its size was comparable to that of the Wartburg. A detail is its construction from brick. Between 1901 and 1907, excavations were conducted on the site under the direction of building councilor Brinckmann.
