The Araburg castle ruin is on the Araberg in southern Lower Austria and is the highest castle in the federal state. Its strategic position in the Triestingtal once made it a stronghold.

History+

The origins of the Araburg date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Lords of Araburg, whose name means “Eagle Castle”. The complex underwent numerous expansions until the 17th century. During the first Ottoman siege in 1529, it served as a refuge for the local population. It also played a role in the religious wars between Catholics and Protestants. Since 1625, the castle was owned by Lilienfeld Abbey, having previously belonged to various noble families, including the Ruckendorffs.
