The castle ruin Balduinseck, also known as Baldeneck, is on a slate cone in the Hunsrück. This hilltop castle, at the confluence of the Wohnrother Bach and Schumbach, is characterized by its unusually placed residential tower, which is directly on the attack side.

History+

In 1325, Archbishop Balduin of Trier acquired the right to build a castle on the territory of the knights Richard and Wirich von Buch. This new complex, directed against the Sponheim castle Kastellaun, was architecturally inspired by Western, particularly French, donjon types. Balduinseck served as the administrative seat of an electoral Trier district, but its function was moved to Zell in the 16th century, rendering the castle insignificant.
