The ruin of the hilltop castle is located at an altitude of 240.5 m above sea level on an east-facing mountain spur of the Schlossberg above the confluence of the Lohr and Aubach rivers, immediately southwest of the town of Partenstein.

The name Bartenstein consists of the Middle High German words barte and stein. They mean axe and rock. Two halberds are still included in the Partenstein coat of arms today. The castle gave the town its name.

The castle was founded by the Counts of Rieneck. It was built shortly before the first documentary mention of the neighboring town of Partenstein in 1233. The lords of the castle thus monitored the trade route from Lohr to the Wiesbütt crossroads. In addition, numerous glassworks were located nearby at least since the 14th century. The castle was the administrative center of the Partenstein office.
