Battenberg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

In Battenberg, at the northeastern edge of the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Battenberg Castle Ruin stands on a foothill of the Haardt. This hilltop castle, located in the municipality of Battenberg in the Bad Dürkheim district, once offered strategic control over the Eckbach Valley.

History+

The construction of Battenberg Castle is attributed to Count Friedrich III of Leiningen, who presumably initiated its building in the 13th century. The castle was owned by the Counts of Leiningen and played a role in the defense of the Leininger Land. Its history came to an end during the Palatinate War of Succession, when French troops destroyed the complex in 1689.
