Besserstein Castle
The Besserstein ruin is the ruin of a former hilltop castle in Switzerland. It is located in the municipality of Villigen in the canton of Aargau at an altitude of 550 m above sea level on the Geissberg. Today it is dilapidated and only a few remains are left.
Nothing is known about the origin of the castle. It was first mentioned in a document from 1244 as a fief of Murbach Abbey. It belonged to the Rein estate, which was owned by the monastery. On February 13, 1259, Count Rudolf von Habsburg and his cousin Gottfried von Habsburg-Laufenburg met here. In April 1259, they renounced the bailiwick of St. Amarintal in the Vosges in favor of Murbach Abbey. In 1291, the Rein estate was sold to the Habsburgs, and thus the castle also came into their possession. As early as 1305, the castle was referred to as a "Burgstall", meaning it was already abandoned.
The Castle Complex+
The castle is located on the eastern edge of a rock spur of the Geissberg. The castle was protected to the west by a 200-meter-long and still approximately 4-meter-high rampart with a moat in front of it. The area is about 45 by 25 meters. Today, only the base of the tower can still be recognized.
