Blankenburg Castle
Blankenburg Castle is a castle ruin on the Haussee lake on Federal Highway 198 in Wolfshagen, on the border between Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Built around 1250 on an island in the Haussee by the von Raben family, this lowland castle was one of the most important Brandenburg fortifications during the border conflicts between Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, and Pomerania due to its location on the border. As early as 1392, it is documented that the Lords of Blankenburg were obligated to the Margrave of Brandenburg as their liege lord. Due to feuds and robber baron activities, the Blankenburgs fell out of favor with Elector Frederick II of Brandenburg in 1456, who had Blankenburg Castle conquered. Only through the intercession of their friends did the Lords of Blankenburg receive the fiefdom over their castle again from the Elector, against the promise to remain with Brandenburg forever. During the Thirty Years' War, Blankenburg was destroyed and remained a ruin. In the recent past, the castle wall was renovated and the moat was deepened to such an extent that it now constantly carries water again.

The castle is surrounded by a 6 to 9 m wide moat. Of the castle buildings, the keep and parts of the castle wall have been preserved. The keep, also known as the Fangelturm, is 24 m high and consists of an 11 m high, square substructure made of fieldstones and a round brick superstructure.
The ruin can be visited without a guide.
