Blankenstein Castle
The Blankenstein Castle Ruin, a former high medieval hilltop castle, is situated on the left-hand hills of the Ruhr in the Hattingen district of Blankenstein.
History+
Blankenstein Castle was built in the 13th century by Count Adolf I of Mark. It served as one of the four main castles for the Counts of Mark to administer their territory. After a decline in the 16th and 17th centuries, a reconstruction in the Historicist style took place at the end of the 18th century, though its inauthentic additions were removed in the late 1950s. The ruin has been a protected monument since 1909.

The Blankenstein Castle Ruin is located on a rocky spur, an offshoot of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, approximately 130 meters above sea level in Hattingen-Blankenstein, in the Ennepe-Ruhr district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
