The Bönnigheim Castle Ruin, also known as the Old Castle, is a structure located in the west of Bönnigheim's old town. As a former Ganerbenburg (a castle shared by several co-heirs), it is now an accessible monument of medieval architecture.

History+

The first documented mention of a castle in Bönnigheim dates back to 1183. Five years later, in 1188, it was referred to as an Imperial Castle under Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and formed part of the town's fortifications. The castle passed into the possession of various co-heirs, including Fritz von Sachsenheim in 1338. From 1388 onwards, the families of Sachsenheim, Neipperg, Liebenstein, and Woellenwarth shared the complex. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was destroyed but rebuilt as early as 1546.
