The Bornstedt Castle Ruin, also known as Schweinsberg or Schlossburg, is a medieval structure. It sits on a hill in the Hornburg Saddle in the Mansfeld-Südharz region in Saxony-Anhalt.

History+

The origins of Bornstedt Castle date back, possibly to the 8th century, when it was part of a fortified settlement. Around the year 880, it is mentioned in the Hersfeld Tithe Register as "Brunstediburg". In the 12th century, the Lords of Bornstete were the owners. Emperor Henry V used the castle in 1115 as a troop base during the conflicts at Welfesholz with the Saxons. From 1120, Esico II is named as the first known owner who named himself after the castle. From 1301 to 1780, after several changes of ownership, the castle was in the possession of the Counts of Mansfeld. The decay of the complex began around 1615.
