History+
The exact date of construction of Botenlauben Castle is unknown, but it is estimated to be around 1180, possibly initiated by Burgrave Berthold I of Henneberg. It was first documented in 1206 in connection with Otto von Botenlauben. From 1220 to 1242, the castle served as the residence of Otto von Botenlauben and his wife Beatrix von Courtenay. In 1234, the castle passed into the possession of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg, as Otto and Beatrix needed financial resources for the Frauenroth Abbey they founded. After becoming episcopal property, the castle was enfeoffed to various noble families.
