Boxberg Castle

A castle in Boxberg was already mentioned in the 11th century. In 1287, the Würzburg Bishop Berthold II von Sternberg exchanged the castle, which was a fief of the prince-bishopric, with the Knights Hospitaller of Wölchingen for Schweinberg Castle. On the foundations of the first complex, a second castle was built in 1430, owned by the Rosenberg family. However, this castle was destroyed as early as 1470 because the Rosenbergs carried out raids against Electoral Mainz, the Electoral Palatinate, and the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. After its destruction in 1523, a third complex was erected, which existed from 1547 to 1857 before being demolished. In 1523, Kuntz von Rosenberg, the then owner of the Boxberg castle complex, supported Hans Thomas von Absberg, known as a robber knight.
