A former rock castle, the Braunsberg castle ruin, stands on a rocky spur above the Aubach Valley in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its location made it almost impregnable from three sides and allowed only a single, heavily secured access. Once one of the ancestral castles of the Counts of Wied.

History+

Around the year 1200, Braunsberg Castle was built by Bruno I of Isenburg, later known as Isenburg-Braunsberg. The complex was owned by the princely Wied family. In March 1945, the castle suffered destruction from US artillery fire, which largely destroyed the previously preserved walls. However, earlier conflicts, such as the so-called “Braunsberg War” after the Thirty Years' War, had probably already impaired the original character of the complex.
