Breitenbach Castle

The origins of Breitenbach Castle date back to the 12th century when it was built southwest of Zeitz. Breitenbach was already mentioned in 1138, with the castle presumably integrated into an older complex from the 10th or 11th century. From the mid-12th century until the end of the 13th century, it served as the ancestral seat of the Breitenbuch family. From the first half of the 13th century, ownership of the castle changed hands several times between the Naumburg Prince-Bishopric and the Margraves of Meissen. In 1306, Margrave Dietrich transferred the castle to Count Simon von Stolberg.
