Buchschachen Castle

In 1263, a then uninhabited piece of forest north of Allhau was granted by King Bela IV to one of the Köveshutis, already known from Allhau, for military services. As mentioned in the corresponding document, this property stretches from the Lafnitz to beyond the Stögersbach. The remains of a motte-and-bailey castle from this period are located in a gorge east of the village, called Schloßriegel. They presumably date back to the castle built by the Köveshutis, which was destroyed in 1291 in the Peace of Hainburg.

However, it is also possible that the castle was built in the late 13th century, the remains of which can still be seen today in the forest northeast of Buchschachen on the Taborhöhe. In any case, another destruction of the castle in the Walseer Feud in 1411 is mentioned. The Buchschachen dominion is mentioned in 1532 in the Schlaininger Urbar as „Puechschachen“. It was completely absorbed into the Schlaining dominion in 1574.
