Burgholz Castle

The construction of the castle is presumed to have taken place around the year 1250. It is believed to be the castle Neuenstein, which was mentioned in 1283 as property of the Lords of Stein. Later, the complex was named Steineck. In the 16th century, Margrave Christoph von Baden was named as feudal lord when he enfeoffed Apollinaris Höcklin with a manorial farm and the adjacent castle. At this time, the castle was already referred to as a “Burgstadel,” indicating that it was already a ruin. The Höcklin family was later ennobled as “Höcklin von Steineck.” Since the 17th century, the name “Burgholz” has been commonly used for the ruin.
