The castle ruin Burgthann, a historic spur castle, stands on a mountain spur above the Schwarzach valley in Middle Franconia.

History+

The origins of Burgthann date back to the 12th century when it was built by the imperial ministeriales of Thann. The first documented mention occurred in 1287. Ownership changed frequently, including Duke Ludwig of Bavaria and Burgrave Friedrich III of Nuremberg. From 1346, the castle served as the seat of a Hohenzollern administrative office. An event was the brief imprisonment of the robber knight Eppelein von Gailingen in 1381. The castle suffered destruction in the Bavarian War in 1460 but was rebuilt three years later.
