The castle ruin of Burkheim, once also known as Neue Burg or Schwendi-Schloss, is a spur castle whose origins date back to the 13th century. It is located on a steep rock southwest of the Burkheim district in Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl.

History+

The first documented mention of Burkheim Castle dates back to January 13, 1231. Ownership changed hands: initially belonging to the Margraves of Hachberg, it passed to the Lords of Üsenberg in 1316. Later, in 1561, Lazarus von Schwendi acquired the complex, followed by the Bastian family. The castle experienced several phases of destruction and reconstruction until it was finally destroyed between 1672 and 1676 during the Franco-Dutch War.
