Čachtice Castle

The origins of Čachtice Castle date back to the first half of the 13th century, when it served as one of the first fortifications to secure the northwestern border of Hungary and was initially under royal administration. In the 14th century, the castle passed into the possession of various noble families. A prominent figure was Ctibor I of Stiborice and Beckov, who took over the castle and its dominion in 1392. In 1569, the complex passed to the Nádasdy family and remained in their possession until 1670. After 1614, the castle was uninhabited and served exclusively military purposes. One of the most famous residents was Elisabeth Báthory, who was mistress of the castle from approximately 1585 to 1610. After her conviction in 1611, she was walled up in a tower room and died there in 1614. After its conquest by anti-Habsburg rebels under Franz II Rákóczi from 1708 onwards, the castle began to decay and was temporarily used as a prison.

The castle ruin of Čachtice is located at an altitude of approximately 376 meters above sea level in the village of Čachtice, in the Trenčiansky kraj, which belongs to the Západné Slovensko region in Slovakia.

Today, the castle ruin of Čachtice is accessible to visitors and can be explored. The remains of the once three-part complex are nestled within a nature reserve, home to rare steppe flora.
