Dasburg Castle

Presumably, the Dasburg was built at the beginning of the 13th century as a defensive structure and refuge castle. Its first documented mention dates back to 1222 as “Daysberhc castrum” in the commentary on the Prüm Urbar. The Counts of Vianden received Dasburg and its associated lordship as a fief from Prüm Abbey and were, in return, obliged to protect the abbey. This led to Dasburg being associated with noble houses such as Sponheim, Nassau, and Orange. Thus, the Dutch king still bears the title “Lord of Dasburg” today. In 1417, the castle passed to the Counts of Nassau-Dillenburg, later it was owned by King William of Spain and then by Nassau-Orange. The Lordship of Dasburg played a strategically important role in protecting Vianden Castle and the main road from the west.
