The Diepoldsburg is first mentioned in a document in 1140, which was owned by the Weißenburg monastery in Alsace. In 1291, the feudal rights to Mönsheim and the Diepoldsburg (named after Diepold von Bernhausen, who was the feudal lord) were in Baden hands. In 1339, ownership changed to Count Ulrich von Württemberg, in 1411 to Maulbronn Monastery, in 1442 back to Württemberg, and in 1498 to the municipality of Mönsheim (Unter-Mönsheim). In the deed of gift, the castle is already mentioned as being in rather poor condition. In 1645, the remains of the Diepoldsburg were also destroyed by the French.
